DJI Avata 2 Review: Is This the Best FPV Drone for Beginners?

FPV (First Person View) drone flying has become increasingly popular in recent years, offering drone enthusiasts the opportunity to experience flight from the pilot’s perspective. While previously, flying FPV required building and configuring a drone from scratch, new ready-to-fly solutions have made it accessible to a wider audience. One such solution is the DJI Avata 2, which offers users an intuitive and immersive flight experience.
The DJI Avata 2 is DJI’s third FPV-focused drone, released on April 11, 2024. It is the successor to the original Avata (released in August 2022) and the DJI FPV drone (released in March 2021). Avata 2 is available as part of the Fly More Combo, which includes the drone, the new DJI Goggles 3, and the new DJI Motion Controller 3.
Design and Durability
Compared to its predecessor, the Avata 2 has been completely redesigned, with a longer wheelbase and a flatter frame for improved aerodynamics. DJI claims that the Avata 2 is more durable and powerful than the original, while also being 30 grams lighter. Without a battery, the drone feels surprisingly light, but its resistance to repeated crashes depends largely on the pilot’s skill and the built-in obstacle detection and avoidance system.
Flight Modes and Controls
The Avata 2 offers three flight modes:
 Normal mode: Ideal for beginners, offering a stable and safe flying experience with obstacle avoidance sensors and an automatic return-to-home function.
 Sport Mode: Provides greater speed and maneuverability, but disables obstacle avoidance.
 Manual Mode: Available only with the DJI Controller 3 (sold separately), this mode gives experienced pilots complete control of the drone, including the ability to perform acrobatic maneuvers.
The included DJI Motion Controller 3 offers an intuitive way to fly, making it easy for beginners to fly the drone. More experienced pilots may prefer a traditional controller for full manual control.
Camera and Image Quality
The Avata 2 is equipped with a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor that can record up to 4K at 60 frames per second. Its improved dynamic range provides more detailed shadows and better lighting balance. In addition, it supports the 10-bit D-Log M color profile, offering greater flexibility in post-processing.
Battery Life
The 2150 mAh battery allows for up to 26 minutes of flight in windless conditions.
More intense maneuvers and windier weather conditions may reduce this time, but overall the Avata 2 offers solid durability that is especially valuable for commercial users who need longer flight times.
Conclusion
The DJI Avata 2 delivers FPV flying, delivering a user-friendly and exciting experience for both beginners and experienced pilots. Its intuitive controls, high-quality camera, and durable design make it an attractive choice for those looking to try FPV flying without the complexity of traditional FPV drones.
