Mavic 3 Thermal, Enterprise & Multispectral

How to Choose the Right DJI Enterprise Drone: Mavic 3 Thermal,
Enterprise, or Multispectral?

When it comes to commercial and enterprise drones, DJI remains at the forefront of innovation and reliability. Their long-standing Mavic series offers a wide range of options, each tailored to meet the specific needs of different industries. Let’s take a closer look at three DJI Enterprise Mavic series drones: DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise (M3E), DJI Mavic 3 Thermal (M3T), and DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral (M3M).
Similarities
At first glance, it might seem that the only differences are the name, price, and accessories, but upon closer inspection, significant distinctions emerge. Let’s start with the similarities.
Flight Time and Safety
All three drones have a maximum flight time of 45 minutes. They are equipped with advanced safety features, including omnidirectional obstacle avoidance sensors, the Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS 5.0), and an enhanced automatic Return to Home (RTH) function.
DJI RC Pro Enterprise
The DJI RC Pro Enterprise remote controller is used for all three drones. It features a 5.5-inch touchscreen, a high-brightness 1000-nit display, and a 3-hour battery life. The battery is built into the controller.
DJI Software Compatibility
The M3E, M3T, and M3M are compatible with DJI FlightHub 2 and DJI Terra. FlightHub 2 provides a cloud-based drone management platform, while DJI Terra enables the creation of detailed 2D maps and 3D models from captured orthophotos.
Enterprise Accessories
All three drones are compatible with DJI Enterprise series accessories, such as a loudspeaker and an RTK module, which enables centimeter- level accuracy for mapping. Additionally, third-party accessories such as the CZI GL10 gimbal-mounted spotlight can be installed. The Mavic Enterprise series uses the same Mavic 3 series batteries found in consumer models like the Mavic 3 Pro and Mavic 3 Classic.
Differences
While there are many similarities, the M3E, M3T, and M3M distinguish themselves through their specialized use cases.
Mavic 3 Enterprise
The M3E stands out with its 4/3-inch CMOS sensor and 20MP camera. It is optimized for mapping with a mechanical shutter, which significantly reduces motion blur and distortions in aerial images. The short shooting interval (0.7s) makes it ideal for rapid mapping. Additionally, it features a telephoto camera with 56x hybrid zoom capability.
Mavic 3 Thermal
The M3T’s strength lies in its 640×512 radiometric thermal sensor, making it ideal for detecting heat leaks, search and rescue operations, and nighttime missions. It also features a 48MP wide-angle camera and a telephoto camera with 7-56x zoom capability—essentially the same telephoto camera as the M3E, but with a minimum shooting interval of 2 seconds.
Mavic 3 Multispectral
The M3M is specifically designed for agriculture and environmental monitoring. It features four multispectral cameras (Green, Red, Red Edge, and Near Infrared) along with a 20MP RGB camera, allowing for the collection of data related to plant health, soil conditions, and other agricultural patterns. The M3M comes with an RTK module for centimeter-level accuracy, making it ideal for precision agriculture and mapping. Additionally, the drone is equipped with a sunlight sensor.
Who Are These Drones For?
Mapping/Surveying
The M3E is well-suited for mapping tasks that require fast image capture and a mechanical shutter. The M3M is ideal for those looking to analyze agriculture or ecosystems and generate NDVI maps based on collected data. While the M3T can also create some maps, its primary purpose is not mapping.
Energy and Utility Services
The M3T is the best choice for energy and utility inspections, such as detecting heat leaks and faulty equipment (e.g., inspecting solar farms).
More general inspections without a thermal camera can be carried out using the M3E.
Forestry and Environmental Research
For environmentalists and forestry professionals, the M3M is an
invaluable tool, as it can identify vegetation health patterns and help
monitor ecosystem changes.
The Best Solution for Your Needs
Choosing the right drone depends on your specific needs and applications. All three drones offer a wide range of features, but different functionalities are suited to different industries—there is currently no single drone that meets the needs of all use cases. If you need high- precision mapping, the Mavic 3 Enterprise is the best choice. If thermal capabilities are essential, the Mavic 3 Thermal is the way to go. For precision agriculture and environmental monitoring, the Mavic 3 Multispectral is the most suitable tool.
